Myleik Teele is the founder and CEO (Chief Experience Officer) of curlBOX, an exclusive, affordable & effortless way to experience products for curly hair that is delivered directly to your doorstep. We first met Myleik in April of 2013, at an invitation-only curlBOX event held at the Ouidad Salon in New York City (see our Ouidad + curlBOX evening of indulgence experience here). Since then we have become huge supporters of this brilliant business woman, who left a successful PR career in LA to eventually become an entrepreneur in Atlanta, where curlBOX headquarters is located. We all know that Myleik is non-stop energy, a jet-setter, goal driven, an avid reader, and focused on spiritual, mental and physical health. We got the opportunity to sit down with her, learning even more about what it is to be the woman behind THE BOX!

Q: We all know that Myleik is non-stop energy, a jet-setter, goal driven, an avid reader, and focused on spiritual, mental and physical health. Tell us how you are able to balance your work from your play… We know it must be a challenge but how do you unwind outside of The BOX? Any vices?


A: I absolutely enjoy what I do so it doesn’t always feel like work to me. Growing up my Mom would always tease me telling me that I need to learn to relax. I don’t really like relaxing. I know that sounds crazy but I really enjoy the fast pace. When I want to just sort of decompress I go to the spa – that’s my thing. I have been to tons of spas all over the US and beyond. I love the steam room and a good massage. 

Q: We love your hashtags and lessons, and as avid readers ourselves, we really get into #myleikbookshare! We notice that a lot of the books you gravitate towards are motivational, inspirational, and ones from which you learn a life lesson. How has reading these books helped you find your center?

A: When I was 25 years old I made the decision to stop reading fiction and focus on reading things I believed would enhance my life. I read a lot of autobiographies and then I got into a lot of career and self-help books. The answers are usually inside of books. There are plenty of things I’ve wondered about and I find peace getting the perspective of others.

Q: This has been the year of the curlBOX! The Crew sets alarms & reminders, and will pull over on the side of the road just to get a subscription! Have you taken it all in?? Can you believe it?

A: Probably not as much as I should. Because I don’t see everyone actually get their curlBOX, I haven’t quite put it all together. I love this very much and I feel so honored and privileged to be able to do what I love. The fact that people love this as much as I do just makes me so happy. I wish there was a way for me to deliver boxes and just have a conversation with the members, maybe then I’d be able to soak it all in.


Q: We know how much brown beauty, and the image that women have of themselves through media, is a focus and drive for you. The Nude Issue in the September curlBOX magazine featuring Taren Guy; Lovefola; Msvaughntv; Antoinette of Aroundthewaycurls; and yourself on the cover, brought that focus to the forefront of your brand. How was the response to this issue? Was there any rejection or controversy?

A: I’m not aware of any controversy. This may sound very strange and borderline absorbed but this is really something that I wanted to get out creatively for me. It was something that I wanted to see that I hoped others would appreciate. When you put out your work you just let it go. An ex-boyfriend (who isn’t on ANY social media) contacted me after we released the photos so I know it was certainly a conversation starter. Ha! 


Q: You have managed to take your successful career in PR and parlayed it into representing well known hair care brands through curlBOX. How has the experience been, driving the direction and being a huge influencer of the hair community? Outside of curlBOX, where is your PR career at present?

A: The experience has been incredible. I love collaborating and working with other brands and being able to do PR differently. At this time I don’t really have a PR career. I closed my agency about three months into curlBOX. I still spend time with a lot of my former colleagues and am able to discuss the profession and culture. I enjoy it immensely. 

Q: From curlBOX, to curlBOX kids, to curlBOX man, and curlBOX natural, people are drawn to your brand. We read that you had no formal business plan, yet you have managed to be hugely successful! How has the feedback been from the brands? Have they noticed increase in sales?

A: Many brands have experienced success with us in terms of sales and overall awareness. We are privileged to work with many of the top brands. Having their trust is insanely rewarding and when they call back to release brand new products with us, we are more than excited. 

Q: Lately there has been a plethora of meet-ups, meet and greets, brunches, and lunches. We notice that as in all things, a curlBOX meet-up tends to be invite-only. Having attended one, we know first-hand what an experience it truly is! How does this notion of exclusivity benefit the brand?


A: I essentially created curlBOX for the girl that may not necessarily be into the meet up or lunch or brunch but still wants fab products for her hair along with a fab experience. Our members like having us on their doorstep as opposed to meeting up with us every month. That’s why we keep the events a bit more exclusive like the membership. I like to really be able to chat with everyone at events and the truth is that it’s just impossible at an event with hundreds of people. I enjoy an intimate setting where we can all get comfortable, let our hair down and exchange freely and comfortably. I’m all about the experience. 

Q: It has been a remarkable year so far. What has been your favorite experience with curlBOX 2013?

A: I’m not sure that I have any favorite experiences. I’m so lucky that I get to be able to belong to this most amazing curlBOX Crew. They make getting up easy, coming to work easy and even taking the hits even easier. Just being able to exchange with them is always the highlight of my day, thus the highlight of my year. 

Q: You have set an incredible standard and high expectations for your VIP’s. How doyou manage to meet those expectations every month? What successes do you envision for curlBOX 2014? 

A: We encourage the brands that we work with to court our members. We liken it to a first date. Do you want to take them out for fast food or do you want to wine and dine them? They really love to spoil our members and who wouldn’t spoil the best girls in the world? It’s easy. I have some really, really awesome things planned for 2014 that I think will solve even more hair problems. I think people are really going to be surprised with we what do. We’re turning 2 in February and we’re turning up!  

Q: Congratulations on your recent expansion! How has it been designing and conceptualizing curlBOX headquarters?

A: Thank you! The design is coming along. Dare I say I’m picky? So it’s been a bit of a challenge with me trying to meet somewhere in the middle of function and fashion. I have to remind myself all of the time that this an office and not my house. It’s coming along very well and I can’t wait to see the finished product.
