On March 26, 2015 I had the opportunity to join Mahisha Dellinger, CEO and Founder of the CURLS beauty brand empire, at the celebration of the publication of her riveting and inspiring memoir “Against All Odds: From the Projects to the Penthouse” in NYC. The celebration coincided with a live Google+ Chat to allow CURListas to participate via internet if they could not attend in person. Dynamic sister duo Natural Hair Does Care conducted a no-holds-barred interview session with Mahisha to give attendees a preview of what “Against All Odds” has to offer readers. Having built her successful empire in CURLS, Mahisha felt the need to give back and share her story in an effort to motivate and inspire girls and women everywhere. In her book “Against All Odds,” Mahisha provides readers with an intimate and transparent recount of her rough early years and how she used her life experiences to help build her million dollar empire.

“Against All Odds” gives readers an understanding of what it was like for Mahisha to be raised between two households in two different socioeconomic statuses. Mahisha was raised in Sacramento, California in an extremely rough neighborhood called Meadowview which is also known as “Danger Island.” Since her primary existence was in the projects of Meadowview, she witnessed first-hand poverty, teenage pregnancy, drugs, gang activity and murder on a daily basis. She escaped every other weekend to “the estate”, her father’s house, in order to feel safe from the rough living of Meadowview.

Although her impoverished and crime-riddled beginnings could have set Mahisha on a path to dysfunction and despair, she was determined to write a different ending to her story. Mahisha’s final escape route out of “Danger Island” was obtaining her college degree and getting into corporate America. She pushed her way through the technology corporation giant, Intel. In “Against All Odds”, Mahisha details her experiences within corporate America, surviving a terrible boss and climbing her way to bigger and better positions within the company. She also shares what finally pushed her to leave her position as Marketing Manager at Intel Corporation to start CURLS.

Last but not least, “Against All Odds” provides readers with essential tips on how to become successful within their own right by turning their own tragedies into triumph. If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur this is a definite must read for you!

Now of course, I also mingled with my fellow CURListas! There were Blueberry Bellinis and CURLS swag bags galore as well! *For more pictures from this event, see our album on Facebook
